Independent Study Component 2
1. Log
2. Posted Evidence
Pictures of my midwife and I, and a picture of a mother that delivered her baby by hypnosis.
Happy 3. Complete the LIA:
Literal
(a) Statement saying: “I, Valeria Iniesta, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
(b) Explanation of what you completed.
For my Independent task I did service learning. I did 35 hours by observing, engaging and asking questions when possible. I would go into service learning mainly on Mondays and Wednesdays, from when they would get back from lunch to when they closed. Each time I went I would try to ask questions about my research or engaged with the parents that went to the birth center.
Interpretive
Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.
I enjoyed talking to the mothers that held their baby in their hands that were once pregnant. I was captivated to see the transformation they all had, the mothers were very joyful and grateful to have had a beautiful birth. I also liked talking to the family and asking why they chose a midwife, or entertaining their children while the mothers had a prenatal. Taking the time to be at service learning and engaging with everyone there represents my hours of work. I also spoke several times to midwife whenever I had questions.
Applied:
Talking to the mothers mainly helped me answer my EQ, as well as seeing them in the before and after light. It is a different atmosphere that goes around in the birth center and they all experienced natural childbirth. I can see the way the midwife talks to them, how they have a close relationship, and how they are well educated about birth. Being around mothers who support midwifery and their principals guided me to my EQ answers. Building a strong bond (answer#1) was always done, and done through 45min to an hour pre-natal. I saw the influence the strong bond had, as well as the influence the midwife had. Their relationships still go on, and always will because the midwife was there through such an important experience. My midwife and I talked about the hospital protocols and how the midwifery model differs, she compared them for me and I saw how important supporting the natural process is (answer#2).
